Employees Respond to Critical Need for Blood

(March 2015) Did you knowthat red blood cells are viable for only 42 days, and platelets 5 days? Add in the economic climate and fewer employer work days by other area business' this winter due to extreme weather conditions - all resulting in critically low levels of blood supply available.

After learning of the current critical situation, employees at North American Credit Services (NACS) and Medical Services of Chattanooga quickly filled-up the donor schedule resulting in full donor drive of committed employees in support of a community-wide 'Give Back 4 the Future' campaign, led by the local Medical Society.  "Our company and employees recognized the dire blood shortage crisis in our community and more importantly, took action to step-up to help make a difference," states Dallas S. Bunton, Sr., IFCCE, MCE Chairman and CEO of NACS and Medical Services. Several employees additionally stepped up to donate at the last minute for colleagues who had come down with the flu and would otherwise not be able to keep their donor commitment, such as the photo shown of a mother and daughter, whom both work at NACS.

Because blood is perishable, hospitals and blood banks face even greater pressure to maintain a constant supply, as blood becomes unusable in little more than a month as reported by Blood Assurance (www.bloodassurance.org).  Blood transfusions are necessary for a wide range of medical treatments, from chemotherapy to major surgery, and according to a recent study released from America's Blood Centers the average victim of a car crash can require up to 40 units of blood. "Just one donation can save up to three lives, a huge reward for a process that can take as little as 15 minutes," shares Joel Henderson, NACS VP Public Affairs and 2015 Blood Donor Recruitment Chair.

NACS and Medical Services host's four campus blood donation drives annually and a long-standing charitable community health partner with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society Foundation, specifically in support of  'Project Access' helping the working poor access health care. NACS began its Chattanooga-based operations in 1981 with less than 20 employees, specializing in the professional collection of healthcare receivables. Today, NACS along with its affiliate company, Medical Services of Chattanooga, is a full service healthcare receivables management, company; comprised of four specialized divisions with a growing workforce of 300 employees.
